Chapter 46 – Worries, Hopes, Fears and Dreams

Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

– 1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)

Emotions play a huge part in each of our lives. The way we feel in any given situation is what we remember about it, and often determines the way in which we respond to it. If we are nervous or worried or excited about something this can easily affect our eating, our sleeping, the way we speak to people, the way we think, the way we pray… So may we surrender to God our emotions, and let Him play a part in the way we respond to situations and to people, and let Him guide us in the way of wisdom and peace.

May we surrender to God our worries – each of those things, big and small, that worry us, even the things we consider silly or trivial. May we be open with God about those things, and surrender them to Him, that He might help us carry them. May we give them into God’s hands and let Him show us how to deal with them. And may we surrender to Him the ways in which we respond to our worry. Our reactions. Our irritability. Our eating and sleeping. The ways in which we speak to people, and think about situations. May we offer all these things to God in surrender, and let Him fill our hearts with His love.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

– Philippians 4:7 (NIV)

Let us surrender to God our fears, too – both the bigger, seemingly important fears, and the smaller, seemingly trivial or unimportant fears. God knows the deepest secret fears of our hearts, and longs for us to surrender to Him. May we give Him our hearts, and ask Him to fill them with that perfect love that casts out all fear. He is able to strengthen and equip us for every situation and bring us through every dark night, so may we surrender and let Him lead us by the hand, knowing His protection and His love.

And may we surrender to God our hopes and our dreams. He knows our deepest secrets, and He cares about the things we look forward to and the things we long for. May we give ourselves to Him and talk with Him about all those things that we hold dear, the things that excite us and the things we dream of. May we surrender our hearts and let Him plant His desires and hopes and dreams within us, leading us ever closer to Him.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb

If I were a wise man, I would do my part

Yet what I can I give Him – give my heart.

– Christina Rosetti & Gustav Holst

Lord God, my Shepherd and my Love,

I surrender my heart to You.

Thank You that You love me, and care about the way I feel.

Thank You that You know about my worries, fears, hopes and dreams.

I give You all the things that worry me – the big things and the smaller trivial things.

I give You the things I am afraid of – the important things and the smaller, silly things.

I give You my hopes and dreams, and all that I look forward to.

I give you the things I love and the things I hate.

Lord, I give You my heart. Please fill me with Your love and show me Your ways.

I want to live completely for You.

I ask for Your wisdom and peace to guard and guide me each day.

I love You, Lord – help me to love You more.
